Eloping at Smith Rock, Oregon.

Spring (April–June)
Spring is one of the best overall seasons. Temperatures are mild, the hills are greener, and crowds are lighter than peak summer. This is a great option if you want good weather without intense heat. It can still be super cold in the high desert but worth it.

Summer (July–September)
Summer offers the most predictable weather but also the most visitors. Midday can be very hot and exposed. If you are eloping in summer, sunrise is strongly recommended for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

Fall (October)
Fall is quieter and cooler. The park is less busy, and lighting remains beautiful in the evenings. This is a good choice for couples who want fewer people around.

Winter (November–March)
Winter is the least crowded season. Weather can be unpredictable, but if you are flexible and prepared, it offers privacy and a very calm atmosphere but getting there can be tough, especially if driving over passes). I would recommend waiting until Spring.

Tips for Eloping at Smith Rock

When to elope at Smith rock

To legally marry at Smith Rock, you will need an Oregon marriage license obtained from any county clerk’s office in the state. Both partners must apply in person, and there is a standard three day waiting period before the license becomes valid unless you request a waiver.

The license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in Oregon. After the ceremony, your officiant submits the signed license to the county for recording. All ceremonies require an officiant and two witnesses. I am ordained if you need someone official to sign your license!

Protecting Oregon state parks are a big deal to us Oregonians. The high desert in Oregon  is part of a fragile ecosystem, it's important to follow Leave No Trace principles.

Simple guidelines include packing out everything you bring, avoiding confetti or loose materials, staying on established trails, and respecting wildlife and vegetation. Even biodegradable items can disrupt the environment, so minimal impact is always best.

Leave No Trace at Smith rock state park

Smith Rock State Park is very exposed, and light shifts quickly due to the canyon walls.

Sunrise: Beautiful light rays, fewer people, cooler temperatures, softer light. Ideal for couples wanting privacy.
Sunset: Warm tones and beautiful rim light. Slightly busier than sunrise but still manageable with the right location choice.
Midday: Not recommended unless necessary. Harsh overhead light and heavier foot traffic.

Best times of day to elope at Smith rock

Canyon Trail Overlook

Difficulty: Easy
AllTrails Rating: ~4.7/5
Accessibility: Short walk from main parking lot, packed gravel and paved sections. Suitable for guests who cannot hike long distances.

This is one of the most accessible ceremony spots in the park. You get sweeping views of the rock formations and the Crooked River without a steep climb. It’s ideal for couples bringing family members, young children, or anyone who needs stable footing. Because it’s close to the entrance, it can be busier mid-day, so sunrise or weekday ceremonies work best here.

Best for: Minimal hiking, guest-friendly elopements, iconic Smith Rock views.

Crooked River Trail

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
AllTrails Rating: ~4.6/5
Accessibility: Mostly flat dirt path with some uneven sections. Not ADA accessible, but manageable for most guests with stable shoes.

This trail follows the river at the base of the cliffs. You’ll be surrounded by towering rock walls with the river running beside you. It feels more tucked away than the overlook but does not require a steep climb. This is a great option if you want dramatic scenery without a strenuous hike.

Best for: Intimate ceremonies with light walking and canyon views.

Rim Rock Trail

Difficulty: Moderate
AllTrails Rating: ~4.7/5
Accessibility: Steady incline, uneven dirt trail. Not recommended for guests with mobility limitations.

Rim Rock Trail gives you elevated views looking out over the entire canyon. The hike is manageable but does include incline and exposed sections. The ceremony views here are expansive and open, especially at sunset when the cliffs are glowing.

Best for: Couples comfortable with light elevation gain and wide-open views.

Misery Ridge Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
AllTrails Rating: ~4.8/5
Accessibility: Steep switchbacks, significant elevation gain. Not suitable for most guests unless they are comfortable hiking.

Misery Ridge is one of the most iconic hikes in Smith Rock State Park. The climb is steep but relatively short, and the payoff is panoramic canyon views that feel dramatic and secluded. Sunrise elopements here offer the most privacy and comfortable temperatures.

Best for: Adventurous couples who want epic views and are comfortable hiking uphill.

When planning your Smith Rock elopement, consider guest mobility and comfort, time of day and heat exposure, crowd patterns, permit requirements, and how much hiking you actually want to do in wedding attire!

As a Smith Rock elopement photographer, I help couples select locations based on accessibility, privacy, and lighting conditions so the experience feels intentional and smooth rather than overwhelming.

If you’re unsure which trail fits your vision, I can recommend options based on your guest count, season, and overall vibe!

Smith Rock Elopement Spots

Smith Rock Elopements
Most Smith Rock elopements are surprisingly simple from a permit standpoint. In many cases, you can exchange vows at the park without any permit at all, especially for small, low-impact ceremonies. You will just have to purchase a $10 parking pass.

In general, you usually do NOT need a permit if:
  • Your group is small (under 20 people)
  • You are not setting up structures
  • You are not blocking public access
  • You leave the space exactly as you found it

Small vow exchanges with just a few guests and a photographer are typically considered normal recreational use of public land.

You WILL likely need a Special Use Permit if:
  • Your group exceeds about 50 people
  • You plan to bring chairs, arches, tables, décor,
  • You want a reserved or exclusive space
  • Your event goes beyond normal use

Oregon State Parks requires permits for larger “special events” or non-traditional activities on park land. Permits typically cost around $150 to $200 for up to 50 guests, with small additional fees for larger groups, and may require liability insurance listing the state park system. For actual weddings, you are required to book the amphitheater area up to six months in advance.

Always check with a park ranger to be sure that your event doesn't need a special permit by calling 541-548-7501. I help you do this as your elopement photographer.

Thank You

I would say hire her for any and all important moments! The photos are beautiful and working with her was a treat. We couldn't have asked for someone more kind, thoughtful, generous, and truly passionate about her work and the people she was working with - everything felt so specific to us as a couple and the wedding that we wanted and the things we wanted to capture. The process from start to finish couldn't have been more seamless, easy, and enjoyable. And now we have memories we will be able to look back on and feel right in the moment again.

TAYLOR

"COULDN't have been more seamless."

We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Dani made everything feel easy and natural. I had no idea how she captured the moments she did, they were truly a gift to look at when everything seemed like a blur!I still get teary-eyed when we look at these photos. We will cherish these forever.

KATIE

"EVERYTHING WE COULD HAVE ASKED FOR."

Thank you so much for the absolutely gorgeous photos for Kim & Josh's wedding. You are so incredibly talented, and your gift and sweet, sweet spirit blesses so many people. The moments you captured are truly a reflection of your heart, and I just can't tell you how grateful we are! Thank you so much & God Bless.

SHARON

"TRULY A REFLECTION OF YOUR HEART."

Dani has been there for so many of our special moments.. engagement photos, wedding, maternity and first family photos!! We LOVED her from the moment we met her and I obsessed over her photos on Instagram before hiring her over 4 years ago and I continue to obsess over her photography. She is not only an extremely talented photographer but she is truly an amazing human. We have no talent for having our photo taken and are both fairly awkward during the process, but she somehow finds a way to capture the sweetest moments and guide you to make photos turn out spectacular! I wouldn’t go to anyone else for future photos and Highly recommend her! Remember you get what you pay for and the quality and overall experience you get with Dani is worth every penny!!

BRITTANY

"YOU CAPTURED THE BEST MOMENTS!"

I knew we needed to go with Dani after seeing her pricing guide, it was so beautiful! Her whole process from start to finish made me feel so important and like I was her only bride even though I know she had tons! She captured the best moments, was not a "diva" about it but like a friend who knew exactly what I needed at every moment. She even helped get me sometime alone after the wedding when everyone was coming up to us! The photos were just the cherry on top. They were, of course, beautifiul and beyond what we could have imagined. I think we even got them back in less than two weeks. Thank you Dani for being exactly what we needed and beyond!
