Caprice and Joel | An Oregon Coast Vow Renewal at Sunset
Sand in their shoes. Wind pulling at everything. Rain, of course. The first time in a long time they didn’t have the kids running around them- it was a perfect Vow Renewal on the Oregon Coast.
Caprice and Joel stood barefoot in front of the beach house we had rented near Cape Kiwanda, looking out at the same stretch of coastline that had quietly witnessed so many other love stories before theirs. Only this one was not about a beginning. It was about everything that came after.
Years of marriage. Parenthood. Being business owners. It’s the kind of life that fills your days so completely that you forget to pause and notice how far you have come.
Their vow renewal was simple in the most meaningful way. No aisle, rows of chairs or formal setup. Just the two of them, a beautiful floral arch by High Desert Florals, a tablescape for popping champagne and me for capturing all of it!
Later, wrapped in blankets back at the house, they watched the sunset with a bowl of homemade chili. No timeline to rush them. No reception waiting. Just quiet celebration and the steady hum of the ocean below. It felt less like recreating a wedding day and more like honoring a life they built together piece by piece.

Why the Oregon Coast Is Perfect for Vow Renewals and Elopements

The Oregon Coast has a way of stripping everything down to what matters. The wind does not cooperate. The light changes constantly. Your hair will not behave. Sand will end up everywhere no matter how careful you are.
Somehow all of that makes the experience feel more real, authentic and aligned to what the marriage road ahead might look like!
Pacific City is especially magical because it sits slightly off the main highway, which keeps it quieter than many coastal towns. The area feels tucked away, peaceful, and deeply connected to the natural landscape.
Cape Kiwanda offers wide open beaches, dramatic sandstone formations, tide pools, and a massive dune that towers above the shoreline. It is both accessible and awe inspiring at the same time. I tend to recommend it for coastal sessions about 99% of the time.
For couples who want intimacy without feeling isolated, it is hard to imagine a better setting.
How to Elope or Renew Your Vows on the Oregon Coast
Choose a Location That Fits Your Vision

Different sections of the coast offer very different experiences. Cape Kiwanda is ideal for couples who want sandy beaches, easy access, and dramatic scenery without a strenuous hike. There are beautiful hikes too if you’re up for it.
You can hold a small ceremony right on the beach or choose a private rental with ocean views for additional privacy and comfort.
Most small ceremonies with minimal setup do not require permits, but it is always wise to check local regulations if you plan to bring decorations, seating, or a larger group.
Prepare for All Types of Weather
Weather on the coast can change quickly, sometimes within minutes. Sunshine can turn to fog. Calm air can become strong wind. Even summer evenings can feel chilly once the sun dips lower.
Bring layers for everyone involved, including blankets and options that can handle damp conditions. Many couples also choose outfits that move well in the wind rather than fighting against it.
Also, Cloudy skies often create the softest, most beautiful light for photos, so do not let overcast forecasts discourage you.

One more hot tip: check the tides. While the beach is beautiful with the tides in or out, there is less accessible when the tide is all the way in.
Keep the Guest List Small
Intimate ceremonies tend to feel the most natural here. The environment itself becomes part of the experience, and a smaller group allows everyone to relax into the moment.
Some couples bring only immediate family. Others invite a few close friends. Many choose to share the experience just between the two of them.
Plan Around Sunset
Pacific City faces west, which means front row seats to spectacular sunsets when conditions are right. The light becomes warm and golden before fading into soft pastel tones.
Temperatures usually drop as the sun goes down, so plan accordingly and have cozy layers ready, maybe even some firewood for a beach campfire.
Where to Stay in Pacific City
A private vacation rental is often the best choice for a vow renewal or elopement. It provides space to get ready, room for family, and a comfortable indoor option if the weather turns.
Many homes in the area offer ocean views or direct beach access. Staying close to Cape Kiwanda allows you to walk to the beach instead of worrying about parking or crowds.
Shorepine Village is a popular area with beautiful homes and easy access to the shoreline. There are also boutique lodging options such as Headlands Coastal Lodge and the Inn at Cape Kiwanda for couples who prefer hotel style accommodations. The Headlands is one of my absolute favorite places to stay- it’s like a PNW inspired boujee hotel.
Caprice and Joel chose a home that backed up to protected coastal land, which created the feeling of having their own private stretch of beach.
Where to Eat in Pacific City
One of the best things about this town is how relaxed it feels. You can go from ceremony to dinner without changing the tone of the day.
Pelican Brewing Company is a local favorite located right on the beach, offering incredible views along with seafood, burgers, and craft beer.
Ben and Jeff’s Burgers and Tacos is casual, family friendly, and perfect after a long day outside.
Doryland Pizza is another easy option, especially if you want something comforting to bring back to your rental.

Meridian at the Headlands is perfect for a more upscale dining experience. I highly recommend splurging here for the vibes. At least grab a drink- it’s so beautiful and located on the hill with views of the ocean.
Many families choose to pick up takeout and enjoy a quiet evening in, watching the sunset from a deck or warming up after a windy beach day.
Things to Do Around Cape Kiwanda and Pacific City
If you are turning your ceremony into a coastal getaway, there is plenty to explore.
Climb the giant dune at Cape Kiwanda for sweeping ocean views. Explore tide pools and search for tiny marine life tucked into rocky crevices.
Bob Straub State Park offers a quieter beach experience if you want space to wander without many people around. Surfing, kayaking, beach walks, and whale watching are all possible depending on the season.
Even something as simple as building a fire on the beach and staying until the stars appear can feel like a meaningful celebration.
If you stay at the Headlands, their ocean-view outdoor hot tub is a must.
Considering Your Own Oregon Coast Vow Renewal
Caprice and Joel did not try to recreate their wedding day. They honored the life that followed it. Their ceremony was not about perfection or presentation. It was about standing in the middle of the life they built together and choosing each other again, this time with deeper understanding and gratitude.
If you are drawn to barefoot moments, wind tangled hair, and a celebration that feels authentic instead of orchestrated, the Oregon Coast offers something that is unmatched. Sometimes the most meaningful way to celebrate your love is not by adding more. It is by stripping everything back until only the important parts remain.
And there are few places better suited for that than the edge of the Pacific Ocean! If you need help building the perfect vow renewal or elopement on the Oregon Coast, contact me and we will plan and capture the ceremony of your dreams!
