A whimsical couple’s photography session at Agate Beach, Newport on the Oregon Coast.

As a photographer, there’s something undeniably magical about a good rainy beach session. You get there and at first, are a little bummed that it’s raining but you realize today’s the day, everyone’s dressed, and there’s nothing else to do but embrace it. Kaiya and Damoni did just that.

We only shot for 30 minutes before they were just frozen solid but you would never know, I had thousands of photos, hundreds to edit. Some couple’s just are so natural at being playful with each other and showing their love that capturing it is almost effortless.

The Couple

I met Kaiya when she was only 11 as her Fifth grade teacher. It was my first year teaching. I was a baby in my twenties and fresh out of college, about to embark on one of the hardest journeys I’ve ever had. In charge of 30 unruly fifth graders, I was teaching at a school notorious for kids needing a little extra love. I was exhausted, constantly trying to make it work and probably a little in over my head, but I persevered. Kaiya and her little group of friends were the only saving grace. They were so sweet and encouraging, and just looked up to me, even though I was not much of a mentor just yet.

Fast forward to know, Kaiya is the same age I was when we first met. How crazy is that! I stayed in touch with her family and got to be a part of their big life events. Kaiya is just that sweet girl that grew up into the most amazing young woman (don’t only old people say “young woman?”). She’s the kind of girl that just seems way too cool for me but she loves and cherishes everyone. Her personality is just infectious- she makes those around her feel important and loved.

The Session

I was so excited when Kaiya booked a couple’s shoot with me with her boyfriend of a year. Getting to do something I love now with people from my life then is so cool and full circle. It makes everything worth it. Instead of wondering why I didn’t just do this in the first place, it’s a good reminder that every season of my life was for a reason and maybe that one was to meet people like Kaiya and her family.

Even though it was weird at first to witness Kaiya in love, it was the coolest thing. Kaiya and Damoni met at Dutch Bros where they both worked. Damoni is the sweetest soul, with a knack for making things fun and special. I could tell right away that they were perfect for each other.

Location Details

We shot at Agate Beach in Newport, one of my favorites to get that vast beach look without too much wind. The Yaquina Head hill blocks a lot of the wind coming from the North. It is also easily accessible with steps down to the beach from plenty of street parking. Plus the views are gorgeous, rain or shine.

If you are debating where you should meet for a session, I always recommend the beach, at least around Oregon. Why? It is a blank canvas. We can go any direction with prompting and editing and your photos will always be timeless and beautiful. While other looks, especially with edits, can go in and out of style, the beach as a backdrop is fool-proof. Plus, the softer colors look great and minimal when printed to display in your home.
